Editorial and Op-ed Support June 2009
June 29, 2009 — Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (Editorial) — “Public Education STEM Needs Growth”
A Public Policy Forum report that found schools need to do more to prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering and math seems to be on the mark. Milwaukee Public Schools has been a national leader in STEM-based learning among children of color with its acceptance of the Project Lead the Way program. STEM-based learning is important because it exposes children to cutting-edge technology, science and math through hands-on experience. Students participating in the program perform better on tests, have higher achievement overall and dramatically increase their chances of attending college, said Lauren Baker, MPS' coordinator for career and technical education.
June 11, 2009 — The Grand Rapids Press (Opinion) — “Scientific Knowledge Needed; Congress Should Approve Bill Holding States and Schools Accountable for Kids Learning Science for Nation's Future”
Science should be treated the same as reading and math when it comes to holding schools accountable for student achievement. In this global economy, science and technology are crucial to the country's economic competitiveness. Congress need only look at how U.S. students continue to lag behind Asian and European students on international math and science exams to take this logical step. Otherwise, employers may need to do a lot more hiring from abroad.
